Elfstedentocht or not? Freeze Friesland, freeze!

As the temperature is falling and the passion is rising, it’s the talk of the town in the entire nation: will there be an Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) or not?

The Elfstedentocht is the world’s largest and longest speedskating contest in the world. It passes all of the eleven cities of the northern province of Friesland and features a distance of over 200 kilometers (125 miles). The point is: the entire ice along the route has to have a minimum thickness of 15 cm (6 inches), which is not the case as of now. With ice transplantations and a little hope and prayer, the Dutch hope to get the ice in order, so the race can be held for the first time since 1997.

Let’s hope they get this done!

What Dutch products do you miss the most?

Hi all,

As some of you might know, I am temporarily in the United States on an extended trip. There are so many Dutch goodies that I miss out here, although I do send myself a care package every once in a while. The things that I personally miss the most are my slice of Dutch wheat bread with Calvé peanut butter in the morning, a frietje speciaal, bitterballen with mustard, and Dutch/Indonesian food, especially with satésaus. Writing this is making me hungry!

Luckily, there are also American products that I have come to love, like Strawberry/Lemon lemonade, Starbucks Mocha Coconut Frappuccino, Cinnabon, Skyline Chili, and cheesecakes from the Cheesecake Factory.

I do miss my Dutch food though. What Dutch goodies do you miss the most? AND, what food from your current country have you come to love?

You might have noticed a problem when you tried to checkout the past day or so. The TNT server is down and our system is linked directly to their database. If theirs is down, so is ours. However, we have set up a new database and you should be able to select the shipping costs now.

I have to manually add each country to the database: most countries have been added, but the rest is a work in progress. Everything should be finished within a few hours.

Important TNT Update

Hi everybody,

I was informed today by TNT that they are no longer offering STANDARD shipping. Unfortunately, this means that all packages will have to be shipped with their PRIORITY service. I find this a very strange decision, but I can't change the rules here.

We have made a deal with UPS and can offer you very low rates. Packages that are shipped with UPS arrive within 2 business days (depending on your location) and one of the most important things: you know where your package is at all times due to their tracking system.

Our system should be updated with the new TNT rates after the weekend.

Hi guys,

I can't believe it's 2010 already. Where did 2009 go? I do remember that the final quarter of 2009 was very, very busy. But that's a good thing. I like it best when it's busy.

The year 2009 has been a year of new ventures for us. We started shippping frozen Dutch food and Dutch vla, as well as fresh Dutch ready-made meals. This has been a very exciting process and we're happy that we took that plunge into the unknown. We can finally satisfy your urges for Kroketten, Bitterballen, and Frikandellen.

We also did our very first fair in the fall of 2009, the Expatica Fair, which was a very useful experience. We met loads of interesting people and learned a lot.

2009 was also a year of new business relationships. We started a partnership with Sunflowerjewels, who have created a unique line of Delfts Blue jewelry exclusively for us. We're selling unique, handmade in Holland, leather baby slippers from Baby Dutch.

We have more plans for 2010! Keep your eyes open for a whole new website design of Typical Dutch Stuff and a line of unique and original products.

Hi guys!

Long time no see! Well, that's not entirely true: although the blog has not been updated in a while, I have been active on Twitter and Linkedin.

The reason why I am updating the blog is simply because I felt bad for neglecting it. I also feel it's a great way to let everybody know what exactly is going on behind the scenes of TDS.

First things first. I have a big announcement to make: we are no longer accepting Paypal payments. We have been a customer for over six years with them. Although I heard the horror stories about them, I never really encountered any serious problems. Until this week. The way they treated me, convinced me to simply STOP using them. I do not want to be associated with their business practices anymore. Luckily for all of us, I will be able to accept credit cards directly within a week (fingers crossed). The contracts have been signed, sealed, and delivered. In the meantime, you can pay for your order with Moneybookers, iDeal, or a bank transfer.

I am also very proud to say that we are accepting frozen goods orders! This means that we are able to ship kroketten, frikandellen, bitterballen and more to selected countries* However, I did encounter a few bumps along the road, but I hope to be able to have everything sorted this week, so we can finally send out all the pending orders!

I think a user-friendly website is extremely important. I try to keep the site as simple as possible: prices are now displayed with and without VAT and in both Euros and US$. Nevertheless, if you do want help with the site, check out our newly created 'How to Use Our Site' page.

I have not been giving this blog the attention it deserves, but it is time for a change! I have been working hard on a new version of Typical Dutch Stuff. The new website will hold over 1500 of the best typically Dutch products and next to all the well-known products such as stroopwaffles, licorice, and coffee, I want to focus more on unique products as well. So, the new site will contain much more special and unique products, such as Delfts Blue and jewellery.

Also, the new site will allow you to create an account, log in, and follow the progress of your order. You will also be able to view your order history. I personally think this is a great improvement, and it was something that I have wanted for a long time.

Another change will be the payment method. Next to Paypal and bank transfers, you will also be able to use your credit card directly and the payment solution Ideal will also be available. If you have a Dutch bank account, you can easily pay for your order using this method.

One thing, TNT Post NL has changed (raised) their shipping rates. This means that we also have had to increase our prices, unfortunately. Moreover, (and I really, really dislike this change) they have decided to 'eliminate' Economy shipping. This means that orders that are shipped outside Europe and weigh more than 2kg can ONLY be shipped Priority. I am looking for alternatives though..

I am relieved to be able to report that we have catched up on all outstanding orders by now and that order processing times will be reduced from 10 business days to 3-5 business days!

Dear everybody..

Unfortunately, we have been experiencing some major technical difficulties behind the scenes, which caused quite a delay with regards to answering emails. Luckily, everything is fixed now, and I am desperately trying to catch up.

Also, due to the huge amount of orders that we have received, a small delay has occured here as well. But, I can assure you, Lian and I are working round the clock to ship out all outstanding orders as soon as possible. I'm writing this entry from my brand new office, which feels really good! Hope you all had a great summer; I spent mine moving into our new place, which basically means that I did not have that 'summer feeling'. The weather here also didn't help, because this summer has been one of the coldest and wettest in the history, unfortunately. I am keeping my fingers crossed for what we call a beautiful 'nazomer' (post-summer).

What I wanted to tell you is that because of the move, I have stumbled upon stock that is close to its expiry date (mainly coffee pods). Now, I obviously can't sell this anymore and its too much for me to drink by myself. Therefore I am giving it all away for free!

The gorgeous weather of the past month has vanished and has made room for the typically Dutch grey and wet weather. Talking about the weather as an opening line when you do not know what else to say is also so typically Dutch, haha. Anyways, as you might have noticed by looking at our home page, we're moving! Yes, we have found ourselves a new space, because although we still love our old space, it had become time to move on to newer things. So, that's what we're doing; we're moving on! What does this mean for the company? Not so much; we will have the opportunity to re-decorate our office/storage facility, which is something that was desperately needed. I have already painted one wall in soft pink, to match the company colors!

There are a few new additions to the website: Pickwick T-Pods Typically English and Kanis & Gunnink Mok Pods (they're twice the size of a normal coffee pod and are created to brew a single large mug of coffee).

We are happy to hear that we have a new princess! She was born on April 10 and her name is Princess Ariane Wilhelmina Máxima Inez. She weighs 4135 grams and is 52 centimeters long.

There are already a few streets named after the little princess, as well as a train; the Princess Ariane Express, which travels from Groningen to Den Haag.

Back in the day, I used to write for a small online magazine and wrote reviews for a consumer website. However, I stopped writing when TDS started to grow, because I just don't have the spare time to sit down and write for fun. However, I was feeling nostalgic a few days ago and decided to read some of my pieces from 3 years ago. I felt that one of them would be nice to share with you; it's a piece on Amsterdam 'through the eyes of a Dutch girl.'

Amsterdam, the city that is so loved. Amsterdam is known worldwide for its open and free culture, you have heard the rumors; you can get weed on every street corner, the people walk on clogs, wear traditional clothing, the red light district, the sex museum, I could go on for ages. Some of those rumors are actually true..we do walk on clogs! No, just kidding, but it is a fact that Amsterdam is very, very open and you can get weed on every street corner. If that is a good thing, is up to you. I personally hate to shop and smell weed everywhere I go. I rarely go to Amsterdam, mainly because it's almost two hours away and our public railroad system basically sucks: the trains are always late, and way too overpriced. But, I do understand the attraction of the city, I mean, many people aren't used to the 'vibe' of Amsterdam. If you decide you want to go to Amsterdam, make sure you book a good hotel, and don't go last minute without booking a hotel, because you will get ripped off. There are creepy people everywhere who will tell you they will show you this 'fabulous' room, but in the meantime, your pockets are being picked, plus you'll end up in this shabby, smelly hotel, but you did pay €100 a night for it. That is not a great way to start of your holiday.

If you want the 'full Dutch' experience, I recommend renting a bike. You could also take the metro to wherever you want to go. I don't recommend taxis, because they are quite expensive, and if you look like a tourist, (come on, you know what I mean; large bags, white socks in open sandals, shorts with white legs, a large camera and a waist bag,) you are probably going to get ripped off. So, be careful.

Amsterdam has 2 famous streets where all the main shops are located; Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat. You will find shops like H&M, Lush, Body Shop, The American Bookstore and many other well known shops. Make sure you grab a sandwich at 'Bakkerij Bart', they are good! Always very busy, but it's worth it! If you want to buy cheap stuff, and do sightseeing at the same time, make you visit Waterlooplein. This is a huge market and they sell everything there; from wooden statues to clothes, you will find it there! There's also another famous (day) market; the Albert Cuyp, you can find all sorts of food, flowers, and so on there. I was walking in Amsterdam a couple of months ago, and me and my friend kind of got lost, and suddenly we found ourselves in a street with red lights behind each window..yep, we reached the Red Light District, or 'De Wallen' as we Dutch people call it. Window prostitution is legal in the Netherlands.

If you want to be in the center of the city, make sure you visit 'De Dam'. Well, you can't really miss it, in the midst of the it stands the 'National Monument', which is dedicated to the Dutch soldiers who died during World War II. If you still can't find it, just look at all the pigeons flying around and sitting on the ground. You can buy special little bags of food, so you can feed them. They will eat out of your hand, and s(h)it on your head, now that's a Kodak moment! There are also mime players, clowns, and many more street artists to entertain you. You will also find Madam Taussaud's Wax Museum there. There a quite a few museums which you really have to visit; the Van Gogh museum, 'Rijksmuseum', 'Stedelijk museum', but I really recommend the Anne Frank museum. I think everybody knows who she was, but if you don't, here's a little history lesson. During World War II, Anne Frank and her family had to hide from the Germans because they were Jewish. They lived with a large family in this little secret room behind a bookcase. Unfortunately, Anne and her family (except for her father) were killed during the war. That room is now a museum, so you can actually see how they lived all those years, everything is in the original state. I really recommend it.

If you happen to be in Amsterdam around the annual 'Gay Parade', make sure you stay and watch all the drag queens! It's a huge parade, filled with dance and music, and to make it all even better; it takes place on boats in the canals, you really have see this. It attracts around 300.000 people each year and is one of Amsterdam’s largest festivals. Please note that if you want to see this, don't take your children with you, because people will occasionally get naked and behave in a manner that might be inappropriate for the young ones. At the end of April it's Queen's Day in the Netherlands. It originally started out as a celebration for the Queen's birthday, but it has evolved into much more than a simple birthday party. The streets will be filled with all kinds of orange decoration, people who are decorated, lots of music and lots of beer. Every Dutch person celebrates this, and we don't mind you joining us!

A Day in the Life of Typical Dutch Stuff

A typical day of my life can be pretty hectic at times, but also quite fulfilling. I start the day with fresh orange juice or a cup of Pickwick Cinnamon or Honey tea and usually a 'boterham' (=sandwich), always 'volkoren' (=wholeweat) with 'belegen' (=aged) cheese and a slice of ontbijtkoek (=spice cake). I also love De Ruijter Milk Chocolate Flakes and Calve Peanut Butter. Although I love to try foreign dishes, I notice that I do really miss my typically Dutch breakfast items whenever I am on vacation abroad (more about that later).

Then, it's time to get started on all the orders that were placed. First, I sort the boxes (recycling!) and if they pass the quality check (insert me squeezing the boxes to see if they are firm enough), then they will be filled with the most delicious Dutch items :)

Next, all the products will be selected and sorted for each order, which ends up looking something like this (although this is only a small part of our space):

Now it's time to pack all the stuff into the boxes, carefully filling it with bubble wrap and taping them shut; pretty straightforward stuff. However, we also spend a lot of time on our gift baskets, because we want them to be as pretty as possible! We have our in-house gift basket specialist, Lian (who also writes a column for TDS), usually comes up with the most beautiful creations!

I have to admit, I have a major sweet tooth, so whenever someone's helping me during the really busy days (mostly Lian or Mary jane), we tend to eat quite a bunch of licorice and chocolates. However, most of the time I take care of the orders all by myself and then I am way to busy to snack.

The Senseo New Generation

We have some very exciting coffee & tea news! If you love coffee pods as much as we do, you are probably happy to hear that we have added 10 new variaties, including 3 new t-pods flavors!

First, we have the AH Perla Cinnamon, AH Perla Vanilla, AH Perla Toffee, and AH Perla Hazelnut coffeepods. These name basically explain their flavors pretty good.

Then, we also have added three new tubs: AH Excellent Smooth Power (Columbian beans), AH Excellent Sweet Energy (Brazilian beans), and AH Excellent Double Boost (Indonesian beans). These three new tubs replace the Zinglez tubs that were already on our website.

New Clogs

Yes..I decided to expand our family, because I love (furry) animals These two cutie pies come from a shelter, which offers a second chance for dumped rabbits, or when their owners can (or want) no longer take care of them. Ninja has blue eyes, which look totally Ninja-esque with the black edges around them. Fee is an adorable girl and she is far more into exploring than Ninja is. We are no longer able to offer the 18 pod bags, as Douwe Egberts decided to no longer produce these. We will be updating the prices of the bags (they will now cost €4.79 per bag for 36 pods, which comes to €0.13 per pod, which is €0.03 cheaper than the old pods). We will also update the bulk packages: we will offer the standard bulk package, which means that the number of pods stays the same, but now this package only contains 5 bags, since that equals 180 pods, the same as our current bulk packages. However, we will also offer "bulkier packages" which contain 10 bags, or 360 pods in total.

Whenever I have the time, I really enjoy baking. One of my favorite recipes is this one for an über delicious chocolate cake. It is really easy to make and it also was a huge success when I made it on Mary-jane's birthday! I covered it with Chocolate letters, it looked really scrumptious!

The recipe for my Scrumptious Choco-Cake

Ingredients
200 g butter
3 bars of bittersweet chocolate (300g)
1 bar milk chocolate (100g)
4 eggs
200g donkere basterdsuiker or brown sugar.
150g flour/baking powder
200g caramel fudge (cut into cubes)
125 ml cream

Preparation

Preheat oven to 175 °C. Divide the butter into small cubes and heat them along with 2 bars of bittersweet chocolate and 1 bar of milk chocolate (save the third bittersweet bar for later) until completely melted. Make sure you do not burn the chocolate! Once melted, allow to cool for a few minutes.

Break the eggs and mix. Add the brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Sieve the baking powder/flour in the egg mixture. Then, carefully fold in the chocolate mixture. Next, stir in the fudge.

Pour the mixture into an oven dish (make sure to cover the surface with butter). Bake for approx. 30 minutes: the inside of the cake should be really moist.

Pour the cream in a small pan and break the final bar of bittersweet chocolate into the cream. Carefully stir until completely melted. Pour frosting on top of cake and spread evenly.

Re-opening time!

We will re-open tomorrow, so this means that normal turnaround times will apply again! All the orders that were placed in our vacation will be processed and shipped this week.

The site has undergone a few minor aesthetic changes, but there are still more changes to come. I have added a new, perhaps quite important feature to the site: the D.E. Points Exchange. On every package of Senseo coffee pods, Douwe Egberts Coffee, or Pickwick tea, you will find the so-called "waardepunten." If you live in the Netherlands, you can save these points and exchange them for Douwe Egberts gifts. However, we understand that a large percentage of our customers are not in the position to do this. Therefore, we have decided to start our own service: you are able to exchange your points for vouchers that you can use in our shop!

On a lighter note: I purchased a new digital camera (the Sony W70) and I really enjoy it. I am by no means a good photographer, as I usually only make product photographs. However, I enjoy using the macro function of my camera..a few examples follow.

We have been quite busy over here at the TDS Headquarters. As you may have noticed, our site has two new contributors; Mary-jane and Lian. Both of them use their writing skills and witty style to either answer all your questions regarding the Dutch culture, or give you a peek into the life of a Dutch University student. They didn't need much time to decide whether or not they wanted to be a part of our team; all it took for me to persuade them was a platter of home-made brownies and a cold iced-tea! I have also decided to make this blog a little more personal, because based on my own experience, I like a personal style when it comes to a company blog. I always like to know that there a real persons working on my orders and answering my emails.

The past week, I enjoyed the summer sun and started reading some great books. After watching Oprah, I really wanted to read Elie Wiesels Night, so that book is on my reading list for the summer. I am now reading a chick flick, as it is sometimes called, Watermelon by Marian Keyes; really a great read for the summer.

Also, don't forget that Typical Dutch Stuff will be closed for the summer from July 20 18 to August 14. I am planning to re-design the site in this period (as well as going on a well-deserved trip), so it will be even more user friendly!

Well, I'm going to settle myself in front of the TV and watch the Worldcup finale!

So, your name is Wendy and you're Dutch. May I ask how old you are?
A woman never reveals her age unless there is no way around it. Let's say I can order a drink legally in the US!

What's your favorite (Dutch) food?
Well, I love Turkish, Indian, and Italian food in general. My favorite Dutch food has to be a "frietje speciaal," basically french fries with mayonaise, curry, and onions! I also love cheese, Dutch desserts, and sweet licorice!

What kind of music do you like?
I actually like a variety of different kinds of music. I currently have Pink's new album on my iPod (perfect for when I exercise) and I love The Counting Crows, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Jamie Cullum, that kind of music.

What's your favorite television series?
Oh my, I have to admit I am secretly addicted to television series! My favorite series at the moment are (in no particular order): Lost, Prison Break, Grey's Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives.

Do you have a favorite book?
I enjoy reading, but I do not have enough time to read everything I want. I just finished Kate Chopin's The Awakening, which I really enjoyed. I plan to read Memoirs of a Geisha in the very near future; I thought the movie was very good. My shelves are filled with new books, so I hope I get a chance to read some of them over the summer. Oh, I forgot; I also think that The Da Vinci Code is a really good read.

Who will win the World Cup?
Who do you think? I sure hope we will win this year! But how can we not with players like Arjan Robben, Ruud van Nistelrooij, and Edwin van der Sar!
