As the temperature is falling and the passion is rising, it’s the talk of the town in the entire nation: will there be an Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) or not?
The Elfstedentocht is the world’s largest and longest speedskating contest in the world. It passes all of the eleven cities of the northern province of Friesland and features a distance of over 200 kilometers (125 miles). The point is: the entire ice along the route has to have a minimum thickness of 15 cm (6 inches), which is not the case as of now. With ice transplantations and a little hope and prayer, the Dutch hope to get the ice in order, so the race can be held for the first time since 1997.
Let’s hope they get this done!
And for the TypicalDutchStuff.com fans, what are typically Dutch Elfstedentocht products? Well, here’s a list:
Erwtensoep (pea soup): this is what folks alongside the route eat. It’s a heavy meal which gives you a lot of energy. And that’s exactly what you need if you’re in subzero temperatures for hours!
Chocomel Warme chocolademelk (hot chocolate): it’s cold outside and for hours you’ve been waiting to see the speedskaters pass by. You can’t even feel your toes anymore. Then what’s better than having a cup of hot chocolate? Every sip of this delicous hot liquid makes you feel so much better. Just go for it!
Sonnema Beerenburg: a Dutch drink, made by adding herbs to jenever, with about 30% of alcohol. This really keeps you warm – and happy! – in cold times.
